Nice to meet you!

My name is Sofia Sabbado Aveline, I’m 30 years old, I live in Três Coroas – Brazil, and I have a bachelor’s in Languages – Portuguese-Japanese Translation from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). I have translated games professionally since 2012, when one of my Japanese language teachers referred me to a video game localization agency that was in need of EN-BR translators. I passed their tests and soon got the chance to work on series that I had only ever dreamed of being a part of. Since then, I never stopped, and my only wish is to do better every time.

I’ve been interested in languages and cultures from a young age, in part due to my upbringing in an international Tibetan Buddhism community in southern Brazil, and in part because I grew up playing games that were only available in English, so all those fascinating worlds and adventures were puzzles that taught me the value of learning a new language. During high school, I was part of two gaming news websites where I’d translate daily news and bigger features – like the Iwata Asks series of interviews or special coverage of events such as E3 – an experience which also influenced my decision of which career to pursue.

My three absolute favorite games are Ōkami, Dragon Age: Origins and Hollow Knight, and in general I’m a big fan of narrative and character-driven games. Outside of gaming, I’m big on literature (fiction, history, philosophy) and language learning, I try (and fail) to keep up with pop culture, I go through drawing phases, I play D&D since high school (with some of the same friends <3) and I love everything about cats.
