The Loc Process

These are a few resources that I believe can be helpful to solo devs or small indie teams that are new to the world of game loc or who would like to know more about it. If you’ve only ever published games in English but would like to change that, consider taking some time to go over what experts in the field have to say about the process; it will save you headaches and allow for better communication and cooperation between you and your localization partners.

Best Practices for Game Localization: a free 36-page guide by members of the IGDA Loc SIG, compiling suggestions by experienced professionals in the field. It talks in depth about internationalization and offers great advice for developers, while also covering culturalization, localization and project planning.

Locland: a free 43-page eBook that goes over why it’s a good idea to localize your game and how to plan for it during development, and also explains important aspects of the localization process and how memoQ helps translators in each of them. Good to get a quick grasp of the role CAT tools play in professional translation.

How to Avoid Game Translation Fails: a blog post from the team over at Level Up Translation that explains why common localization issues happen and how to avoid them; a good reading for any developers thinking about localizing their game. They have other very informative and useful posts as well, so if you like this one it might be worth taking a look at their archive.
